Laboratory Exercises In Microbiology

The Laboratory Exercises in Microbiology, 4e by Pollack, et al. presents exercises and experiments covered in a 1 or 2-semester undergraduate microbiology laboratory course for allied health students. The labs are introduced in a clear and concise manner, while maintaining a student-friendly tone. The manual contains a variety of interactive activities and experiments that teach students the basic concepts of microbiology. It also covers methods that allow the safe movement or transfer of microbial cells from one type of growth environment, classification and identification of microbes, microbial biochemistry, medical, food and environmental microbiology.

FEATURES

Minimal text. Well-written and concise introductory text material leaves students plenty of time to engage in activities and experiments that promote both a deeper understanding of microbiological concepts and principles. Many of the current competing lab manuals merely duplicate much of the text and illustrations found in their accompanying textbooks, therefore making the lab manuals lengthy and as a result more costly to students. The Pollack/Microbiology Lab Manual will keep descriptive text to a minimum and will not just pick up chunks of text from Black/Microbiology 7e. Lab is not the right place for students to read through pages of lecture-type text, leaving them little to no time to perform experiments, answer questions and write up lab reports.
Self-contained Lab Units. All pedagogical features will be complete for each Unit, including Lab Reports. This will help keep students focused on the topics learned in that lab.
Variety of Questions and Activities. Includes fill-in-the blank, art labeling, coloring, identification exercises and Critical Thinking Questions - thought-provoking, open-ended questions appearing at the end of each Lab Unit that will summarize concepts learned in that lab.
Specimen Handling Protocols lab exercise. A unique and special feature not included in any of the competing texts and is of great value to students pursuing careers in the allied health fields.
Lab Experiments. Integrated within the discussion material, not just at the end of the chapter after students have read pages and pages of text.
Comprehensive glossary of Working Terms and Definitions. Appears at the end of each exercise to reinforce new terms and their definitions.
