Diagnostic Pathology : Gastrointestinal

This is an interesting book and I am sure that it will appeal to many surgical pathologists, and especially pathology residents. The condensed text and the abundance of high quality illustrations are its main virtues; many of us like seeing the same lesion illustrated from different angles and under different magnifications. Nevertheless, showing the book around to my colleagues, I discovered that not everybody liked the profusion of illustrations; one actually told me that for him, less would have been more, and that he would have liked a more critical selection at the expense of the multitude of pictures, which, we all agreed, were of highest quality. The condensed text will appeal to some pathologists, but some will find it confusing. Personally, I often had trouble following the logic of incomplete sentences and in many places I could not fully understand the implied meaning. My residents also could not understand all the intricacies of the bulleted text, which are not so obvious to the uninitiated. I also wondered whether it is always necessary to list so many conditions under the rubric etiology and pathogenesis, especially since those facts are not always important for the diagnosis. Nonselective listing of various immunohistochemical antibodies is yet another aspect that I did not appreciate. Sometimes, immunohistochemistry is listed under microscopic pathology and, other times, under ancillary tests, even in the same chapter. Key facts, printed on a pinkish background, are often not limited to "key facts" (e.g., is the prevalence of Barrett esophagus of 1.6% in Swedish population a key fact?). References are not always very useful, and I could not understand how some were chosen. Still, I think the book will be attractive to some pathologists, primarily because of the outstanding pictorial material. Only time will tell whether it will survive against the other outstanding textbooks dominating the field of GI pathology.
