The classic text on the Mayo Clinic's experience with bone tumors is now in its updated Sixth Edition. Dahlin's Bone Tumors presents a succinct, profusely illustrated summary of the largest single collection of well-diagnosed bone tumors anywhere in the world. The book contains a strong blend of archival material and new cases, and incorporates the latest knowledge about the grading and staging of these tumors. Benign and malignant neoplasms are discussed on the basis of differentiation.

In the Sixth Edition, all gross anatomy photographs and photomicrographs are in full color approximately 400 new full-color illustrations throughout the book. More attention is given to computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images. The book includes new information from recent clinicopathologic studies about radiographic and histologic variations in different tumor types, including chondroblastoma, osteoblastoma, and parosteal osteosarcoma. The section on neoplasm simulators has been expanded to include some conditions, such as neuropathic joint, that may present as a neoplasm.

This is a superb book for general surgical pathologists that provides an excellent review of the pertinent clinical and histologic features of bone neoplasms encountered in practice. The standardized format allows practicing pathologists to rapid access to the information they need when formulating a differential diagnosis and is supplemented by an effective index. Although the book primarily addresses neoplastic disorders, a helpful and extensive chapter (76 pages) covers benign mimickers. The book's informative first chapter describes how bone tumor resections and biopsies are handled at a large volume institution. Given the particular emphasis on a multidisciplinary approach in bone pathology, the book is especially helpful in describing radiologic characteristics, with each diagnostic entity containing one to three pages of radiographs of pertinent modalities. The clinical characteristics of each lesion are masterfully and systematically illustrated, and each diagnosis includes a graph describing age distribution and an illustration representing frequency of anatomic location. The authors have done an excellent job of integrating pertinent references with personal experience and incorporating institutional data from a large number of institutional cases to produce a book that is both informative and enjoyable. With this latest edition, the book reconfirms its leading role in the field of bone pathology, remaining one of the most practical and definitive treatises on this subject. It is highly recommended to all practicing diagnostic pathologists and should be in all pathology and general hospital libraries
